I. Introduction

1. Which GPS maps must be unlocked?

Some of our maps must be unlocked before they can be used with the full level of detail in Mapsource® or Basecamp® and before they can be transfered to your GPS unit. To find out if your purchased map has to be unlocked, please read the instructions in the email you have received after your purchase or login into the MYMAPS Area and have a look at the overview of your map licence. If you have to unlock your map before first, you will get further information there.

2. Are there any disadvantages because the maps are locked?

There are no disadvantages, except that you have to do the unlock procedure before the map is firstly used on your GPS receiver. Every locked map can be unlocked for a total amount of 2 times. So you can be sure that you can still use your map even if you will buy a new GPS receiver in the furture. Of course you can aquire more unlock codes if you need them. Please send us an email with your licence data in that case. Further unlock codes will also be free of charge, of course.

II. Windows®: How to install Garmin®’s Mapsource® or Basecamp® Software

Garmin® offers two main programs for managing their maps: Mapsource® and Basecamp®. While Mapsource® has the most features, Basecamp® is the newer software product with a modern User Interface. In addition to managing maps, both programs can import waypoints, routes, and tracks from your GPS-Receiver as well as from other sources (e.g. Internet).

Both programs are available free of charge from Garmin®’s website. Our maps are compatible with these standard programs. If you would like to use our maps with MAC OS, you have to use the free software MapConverter to convert our maps into the MAC fileformat.

This Tutorial uses Mapsource® later on for unlocking your maps. So we recommend to install both programs (Mapsource® and Basecamp®) onto your computer, regardless which program you plan to use later on. It’s no problem to have both programs installed onto the same computer.

III. Windows®: How to unlock your GPS map for your GPS receiver

1. Create an Unlock code your GPS receiver

To unlock your purchased copy of your map, you’ll need the unique Unit ID of your GPS receiver. The Unit ID is a 10-digit number which is absolutely unique. Every Garmin® GPS receiver has such a number. There are to ways to figure out the Unit ID of your GPS receiver: by your mapping software or from the receiver’s menus itself.

Under Mapsource®, please connect the receiver to your computer and go to Utilities -> Get Unit ID. With Basecamp®, please also connect the receiver to your computer and have a look at the Library on the left side of the screen. You should see your receiver with it’s Unit ID. To get the Unit ID only with the help of your receiver please refer to the receiver’s manual how to find the Unit ID. Some examples:

  • eTrex® and GPSMap serie: Go to Main menu -> System and press the options menu button. Choose Software Version.
  • Nüvi® serie: Go to Tools -> Settings -> System -> About
  • Dakota® and Oregon® serie: Go to Main Menu -> Setup -> About

Please write down the Unit ID or copy it to your clipboard. You will need it later on.

After that please log in into the MYMAPS area. For logging in please use your Useraccount data which you have received by email after your purchase. After logging in successfully switch to your map licence by clicking on “Download / Unlock”, and then please click on the button “Unlock Map” on the right side of the screen. In the following form you have to fill in the unique Unit ID of your receiver (see above) and for security reasons also your password again. To recognize and manage your unlock codes easily later on, you are able to fill in a user-defined comment, too (this is optional).

In the next screen all data will be shown to you again. If everything is ok, please start the generation of the Unlock code by clicking “Generate Unlock Code”. The Unlock Code will be generated immediately and shown to you after generation. Don’t worry, it will never be lost: It is saved into our database and also send to you by email automatically. You can login into your Useraccount at any time and get access to all of your generated unlock codes.

Please write down the Unlock code or copy it to your clipboard. You will need it later on.

2. Unlocking your Map with Mapsource®

This manual is written for the recent Mapsource® version 6.14 and newer. If you use an older version please update your version with a free update from Garmin® to the newest version.

Now please start Mapsource®. The program recognizes that there are unlocked maps installed and let you start the unlock procedure. Please start the unlocking procedure of your map by clicking the button Unlock Maps.

If your Mapsource® installation do not recognize your newly installed locked map, please first of all select your newly installed NepalGPSMap map by selecting it with View -> Select Product. After that, please go to View -> Zoom out Region. You then should see a rough overview map of your new map, because your map is still locked and now has to be unlocked first, before you can see the whole level of detail. Mapsource® also shows you a hint in the lower right corner that the Map Detail is currently locked. After that, please go to Tools -> Manage Map Products.

In the following window of the “Map Product Manager” switch to the tab “Unlock Regions” and open the input form for new unlock codes by clicking “Add…”. Fill in the unlock code you’ve generated in Section 1 and add a comment which describes your unlock code if you like.

After you have entered a valid unlock code the map will appear as “Unlocked” in the Map Product Manager. From now on the map can be used on your Desktop-PC and also on your GPS receiver. Please note that you are only able to transfer the map onto the GPS receiver you have generated the unlock code for. It won’t work on a different GPS receiver.

3. Unlocking your Map with other Software (e.g. Sendmap)

If you are not using Mapsource® or Basecamp®, you can unlock and transfer your map to your GPS receiver with free software, too.

Most software of third party publishers (e. g. Touratech QV® or Fugawi®) can show locked maps without any problems on your Desktop-PC. But most programs are not able to unlock the maps and so they are not able to transfer the (unlocked) map to your GPS receiver. Please have a look at the documentation of your software if it supports locked Garmin® maps.

We recommend that you use the free software SendMap to transfer maps to your receiver. Sendmap is included in all of our maps and so is available free of charge to all of our customers. Please login into the MYMAPS area and download the “Sendmap Installation File” of your map. After downloading, please extract it using your favourite ZIP-Software (e.g. 7-ZIP (free).

After extracting the ZIP-archive, please doubleclick the “sendmap20.exe”-excecutable. Drag and drop the file “filelist.txt” into the Sendmap-Window or press the button “Add maps” and select the file “filelist.txt”. After that, please click the button “Enter unlock key” and enter the Unlock code (or paste it from the clipboard), which you’ve previously generated in Section 1 into the window.

Choose “Connect” and “Upload maps to GPS” to send the map to your receiver. If you like you can also create an EXE-file for future uploads (it’s then a simple doubleclick to transfer the map) or you can create a GMAPSUPP.IMG which you can manually copy to the SDcard of your receiver.

‘MapInstall’ will open. Hit ‘Continue’ on the first screen and select your GPS unit from the drop down menu. Select the map you wish to send to your GPS Unit, zoom out and then highlight those areas of your map you wish to send to your GPS unit by dragging your mouse from the upper left hand corner to the lower right hand corner of the map. After that, please hit ‘Send Map’. Note: In this example the GPS unit has a large amount of free space, so the entire map was highlighted to be sent to the GPS unit.
